Battery R&D Capabilities Internship

About Us

We are Sila, a next-generation battery materials company. Our mission is to power the world’s transition to clean energy. To create this future, our team is building a better lithium-ion battery from the inside out today. We engineer and manufacture ground-breaking battery materials that significantly increase the energy density of batteries, while reducing their size and weight. The result? Smaller more powerful batteries that can unlock innovation in consumer devices and accelerate the mass adoption of electric cars to eliminate our dependence on fossil fuels. We're tackling one of the biggest challenges of our time every day, and together we're redefining what's possible. Are you ready to be a part of a team committed to changing the world?

Who You Are

You’re a science or engineering student excited to work on innovative and scalable systems that drive R&D forward. You keep a curious and open mind, know when to be practical, and love seeing others benefit from your work.

As a Battery R&D Capabilities Intern, you’ll help deliver safe, powerful, and accessible systems that accelerate battery R&D. You’ll work closely with battery scientists, engineers, and technicians across multiple teams to build best-in-the-world prototyping and testing systems while learning about how lithium-ion batteries are designed, built, and analyzed. Your projects will include a combination of software, hardware, and process development at the battery electrode and cell levels.

  • Plan and execute projects combining improvements to hardware, software, and procedures to grow and strengthen Sila’s battery R&D toolset
  • Work collaboratively with technicians, engineers, and scientists to troubleshoot and prevent issues
  • Effectively document and communicate ideas, procedures, and results understandable by diverse teams

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Current enrollment in an accredited university or college
  • Coursework towards mechanical, electrical, or similar engineering or physical science degree
  • Experience working with databases and writing programs or scripts is a plus
  • Proficiency in data analysis and basic statistics
  • Ability to commit to a full-time, 40-hour work week at Sila’s Alameda office for at least 12 weeks. Commitment for a work term of 16-26 weeks is strongly preferred.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, a lab coat, gloves, and safety glasses
  • Move long distances (such as from building to building) and be stationary for extended periods of time
  • Visually inspect objects and use hand tools such as wrenches and screwdrivers
  • Lift objects up to 20 lb

The starting base pay for this role is between $25/hr and $39/hr at the time of posting. The actual base pay depends on many factors, such as education, experience, and skills. Base pay is only one part of Sila’s competitive Total Rewards package that can include benefits, perks, and equity.  The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
